Gem came to us in February of 2021 to rehabilitate from a suspensory injury. He was one of the top small tour dressage horses in the country in 2019 when he sustained the injury. At the time, it was decided that turning him out for a year would be the best solution for him. When it came time to getting him back in shape, his owner was in Florida, so we offered to bring him back. He has a huge personality and yet, was a wonderful partner in his rehab. He never got silly or tried to do something that would set himself back. In fact, he was so quiet, we were almost worried something was wrong with him because he had been very electric in his competitive career. Then we body clipped him…. For some reason, that reminded him of his show horse days and he became much lighter in his loafers. However, by this time, it was the fall and he was strong, shiny and teaching us what a real dressage horse feels like.
It was a wonderful experience to ride a horse so well trained and knowledgeable. He is a lovely schoolmaster and our horses flatwork will be better for the time spent on his back. Happily, we found a wonderful owner who wants to let Gem continue playing professor as he helps her pursue her dream of getting a Bronze medal. The best part for us is that he is going to stay at Far Hills where his antics can entertain us and his movement wow us.
